Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. Gum disease is caused by the growth of plaque on the teeth and beneath the gums. Periodontal disease is usually painless, so you may not know that you have it. If you have any of the following symptoms, Dr. Anthony Gonzalez may recommend deep cleanings known as scaling and root planing:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A change in your bite (how your teeth fit together)
  • Loose teeth
  • Pus coming from the gums

Scaling and root planing is an effective way to treat gum disease before it becomes severe. During scaling, our dentist will clean between your gums and your teeth all the way down to the roots. Then our dentist will perform the root planing part of the procedure. Your tooth roots will be made smooth, which makes it hard for plaque to adhere to them. If you maintain good dental care after this procedure, the gum disease should stop progressing and your gums will become firm and pink again.
