Toothaches can be a real annoyance. If you have a toothache, you probably have some questions, including how to relieve the throbbing pain. We would like to help you by offering some information and advice on how to handle toothaches.

Unfortunately, there are many reasons you could have a toothache. Some common reasons include:

– food debris stuck in between teeth or in your gums
– cavity
– infection in the gums
– abscessed tooth
– cracked tooth
– sinus infection

If you have a food particle stuck in your teeth or gums, you can use dental floss to gently remove the offending piece. NEVER use pointed instruments–including wooden toothpicks–to try and remove food particles from in between teeth.

For more serious issues, including a cavity, gum infection, or an abscessed or cracked tooth, visit your dentist as soon as possible for treatment. Dr. Anthony Gonzalez can help you with the proper tools and technology in order to relieve the pain and discomfort. For a sinus infection, visit your physician.

To prevent toothaches in the future, take excellent care of your smile. Brush twice a day for two minutes, floss once a day, and include over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash at your dentist’s recommendation. Wearing mouth guards when playing contact sports and activities may help prevent oral injury. Visiting your dentist twice a year is also recommended.
