The holidays are a wonderful time of year filled with family, friends, and lots and lots of sugary treats. While these treats may taste good, they can be harmful and damaging to your teeth and gums. So what can you do to keep your mouth healthy during the holidays?
It’s very important for you to not overindulge in sweets during the holiday season. But there are a few sweets you should be extra cautious with. For example, please know that sticky, sugary foods may be an issue. This type of food will stick to your teeth, leaving your pearly whites exposed to sugar. This can, of course, leave you more vulnerable to tooth decay.
Sweets in moderation are probably fine, but the longer you expose your teeth to sugar, the more damage can occur. It may also be a good idea to keep a toothbrush with you. This way you can brush right after eating those yummy holiday sweets. Just remember that if you drink highly acidic foods and beverages you should wait a half hour before brushing since your enamel could be softened.
Lastly, remember to drink lots of water. This will help rinse away food residue that stays on your teeth. Also, staying hydrated helps to keep your mouth’s bacteria in balance. Don’t forget to keep to your oral hygiene routine, and never skip brushing or flossing.
